Day 4 - Sunday 5/24/2015 - Chasing the Cumbres & Toltec and Driving to Durango

I got up and went down to the train yard while Emily slept in. It started raining on me so I gave up and went back to the hotel after seeing the 489 pull up to the ash pit. I helped Emily finish packing up and loaded the Cruze. We saw the 489 leaving with the morning train and chased it up the hill. It was a pretty constant rain and the 489 was having a lot of trouble slipping with the rusty rails (they hadn’t been used all winter) and the rain. She would get some speed on the straights and then slow to a crawl on the curves. We chased the 489 to the state line into Colorado but turned back because we needed to head to Durango (and it was snowing by then!). In Chama, we saw the 463 in the yard and tried again to get my parents to see us on the web cams in the Chama yard.

We then decided to head to Durango which is about a two hour drive. We grabbed Subway in Pagosa Springs. We then went east of Pagosa up Wolf Creek pass to the trail for Treasure Falls. We attempted to hike it in the rain but turned back as our jeans got soaked! We then headed for Durango where we picked up our tickets to the D&S and visited their museum in the round house. After that we window shopped in Durango for a little bit and watched the mountain bike race in down town Durango for a bit. I think the Iron Horse road bike race to Silverton was the day before. We checked into the Iron Horse Inn and got dinner at Home Slice Pizza.
