Day 4 - Wednesday 7/27/2016 - Hike Bull Head Lake

We woke up at 7:00am and Emily went down to the lake to take in the sunrise while I got ready (our legs were plenty sore at this point). The weather forcast called for afternoon rain so we decided to put ourselves on the wait list for tomorrow’s boat to Grinnell Glacier and do Bull Head Lake hike instead. Besides, our legs could use a rest day… But first we had to take in the near perfect view of Swiftcurrent Lake from the hotel!

The hike to Bull Head Lake continued on up Swiftcurrent Pass but it was pretty minor elevation gain until past Bull Head, perfect day to help our sore legs! The trail started from the Swiftcurrent Inn parking area and went by Fishercap Lake, Redrock Lake, Redrock Falls, and finally Bull Head Lake. We started the hike about 8:30am in beautiful morning light. We saw a moose feeding at (in) Fishercap Lake and stopped and watched it for 15 minutes or so. We again saw another moose feeding at Redrock Lake before then taking in Redrock Falls. Bull Head Lake was like a mirror and surrounded by the garden wall and a really pretty lake! The pictures really didn't do Bull Head Lake justice! Swiftcurrent Glacier was on the cliff above the lake as well! We should have continued around the lake to the start of the train up to Swiftcurrent Pass but thought it got too steep too quick. I was itching to try to do some of the trail up to the top of the garden wall and the pass but Emily wasn't having it and rightfully so. This was supposed to be an easy day after all.

We made it back to Swiftcurrent Motor Inn by about 12:30 and enjoyed a pizza for lunch. We then hit their gift shop again and retreated back to Many Glacier Hotel. We showered and Emily took a nap. Our legs were sore!!! Bull Head only gained about 400 ft in elevation but was a long 7.5 miles! While Em napped I went down to the lounge to take in the sights and read a bit. Just when I sat down, a ranger lead tour of the hotel was started and I had to jump up (as fast as sore legs could) and join it. The tour was very interesting! The tour took us around to different parts and hear about its restoration. We couldn’t see the actual lobby as it was being worked on but saw some great photos of it through the years (it was built in 1915) as well as photos of the renovation.

That evening found us back at the dining hall at the hotel. We enjoyed drinks (Huckleberry Old Fashions!) in the lobby while we waited for a window table in the dining hall. The meal was again enjoyable and the sunset was again stunning!

Bullhead Lake Hike - 7.2 Miles round trip; 425 ft elevation gain
