Day 3 - Saturday 7/21/2019 - Travel to Reykjavík
Our 7th anniversary! We both woke up pretty early, but didn’t budge out of bed til 7 AM or so. We still got out the door earlier than normal and hit the famous mountain / waterfall, Kirkjufellsfoss, in the pretty morning light. It was sunny this morning, as yesterday there were still clouds on the top tip of the photo mountain. We really enjoyed the views and I got more photos. We then hit the road and started going east. We decided not to take 56 down to the south of the peninsula and to stay on the north side. This road quickly changed to gravel but it was a decent gravel road at least! The views were again outstanding and the weather was great.
We eventually got down to the south side of the peninsula and saw the Gerðuberg Cliffs. It was windy but we had fun exploring the unique area! Also on our list was a crater near the cliffs, but that required a hike which neither of us was up for. So we started toward Reykjavík. We eventually got off of the peninsula turned onto Ring Road 1 but going away from Reykjavík as a side drive. We then turned onto 50 for a loop that took us by Deildartunguhver hot springs were we also grabbed lunch in the form of hotdogs with a side of fries and an Applesin to drink. The hot springs were so neat and produced so much water at 212F that it is pumped a good distance to heat homes!
We the continued on down 50 back onto 1 the ring road, through the 6km long tunnel under the Hvalfjörður fjord and onto Reykjavík, arriving just before 2 PM. Our apartment we rented was on the same street as the Hallgrimskirkja church just a block or two away. Talk about location! After resting a bit, We went out shopping for souvenirs. We passed by Brauð & Co bakery so Em got a snack of a crescent roll in the form of a muffin that was tasty. I got ice cream a few shops down that was rhubarb with Skyr ice cream. For keepsakes, I got a set of lava rock coasters and Emily finally found an Icelandic wool beanie she liked. We were both tired and were back at the apartment a little before 4 PM.
We rested up and looked for places for our anniversary dinner. We decided on a place called Rok which was a small dish / tapas style place right up the street. We had a cured reindeer that was just okay. We also had Thai shrimp that were good but lacked spice. The winners were the lemon cured salmon on a crustini roll as well as a duck confit. Both of these were outstanding! We also got drinks and bread with the meal. We then went down the street for ice cream for desert. I got a rye bread ice cream which was delightful! Emily had an extra creamy vinnella one that was also good. We called it a night back at the apartment. We cleaned up and started to pack. Emily passed out in the couch and I called it a night at 11 or so.
